In my experience, most consultants to nonprofits do not have a nonprofit background. Businesses and nonprofits operate with completely different objectives, definitions and measurements of success, workforce incentives – the list goes on.
I’ve also found that many consultants prefer not to work with small nonprofits, probably because the bigger nonprofits can afford more. But even when they do, their experience with large organizations doesn’t necessarily translate to smaller ones.
I have over 25 years of experience in small nonprofits across a wide variety of organizations in Northern California; Washington, DC; and Greater Boston. I began my career in policy and organizing in vulnerable communities. My considerable fundraising experience includes years of grant writing and securing corporate sponsorships. I’ve run programs from food pantries to housing support, and I’ve set up comprehensive volunteer management systems for three different organizations.

I’ve also directed many events, fundraisers and otherwise. I did so regularly for nearly eight years when I was the executive director of a historic public forum. That’s where I first learned what it takes to run an operation when you’re the only person on staff. It’s not for the faint of heart, my friends – but I’ll bet you already know that!
In addition to work experience, I have a Master’s degree in Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Nonprofit Management. I also have extensive volunteer experience, including having served on several nonprofit boards.
Nonprofit management is what I do. It’s what I’ve always done. My experience in the sector has given me the knowledge to know what works. Most importantly, I understand that the causes you support are your greatest passions and deepest sources of pride.
